What is Canyoneering?

Canyoneering is an extreme sport of travelling down a river situated in a canyon by a variety of means including scrambling, floating, swimming, trekking and abseiling (Collins English Dictionary, 2003).

The term Canyoneering originates in United States. This started in Philippines on year 2004, which is mostly done by the foreigners only. Nowadays, this is the rising unique adventure sport that is becoming famous in Cebu specifically in Badian, Cebu. It is possible that due to the travel adventure blog like “Pinoy Adventure” and “Byahe ni Drew”, this exceptional outdoor sport became popular nowadays even on locals.

How to get there:

There are various airlines which fly daily to Mactan, Cebu like Philippine Airlines, CebuPacificAir, AirAsia. You may download AirlinesPromo App for daily fare update and seat sale.

From Mactan Airport, rode a taxi going to Cebu South Bus Terminal.

From Cebu South Bus terminal, ride a bus going to Bato via Barili. The fare cost is 132 pesos. Buses are leaving every hour from 4:00 am until 12md. The travel lasts for almost three hours. Tell the conductor to drop you off at Brgy. Matutinao, Badian. It is approximately 130 kilometers southwest of Cebu City. There we met our guide.

Where to Stay:

Cottages or rooms are available in vicinity of Kawasan Falls for overnight stay which ranges on 1,500 to 2,500 pesos. Tables are available for rent if you want to go picnic which costs 500 pesos. Try to rent the raft which can take you under the waterfall for a very nice waterfall massage.

The experience was indescribable. We tried to go downstream, from Kanlaob, Alegria to Kawasan Falls in Barangay Matutinao, Badian in Cebu. Kawasan Falls has three main falls. It took us four hours to reach Kawasan Falls. Four hours of swimming, climbing, waterfall jumping, trekking and rappelling. All of the bruises and scratches are worth it! Waterfall massage is highly recommended.

Tips:

  • The more people joining, the cheaper the rates. However, the fewer, the better in terms of the quality or safety as the guide can focus on each person and assist them carefully.
  • Do stretching first.
  • Wear rash guards and aqua shoes. Remember that the rocks are slippery.
  • Take a leap. Face your fears.
  • Enjoy every moment!
